Sinopsis:

Synopsis: An Englishman studying the illustrations of Eugène Delacroix, uncovers never seen before illustrations by the French artist, while in Morocco. The Englishman sets out to find out if these drawings are indeed the work of Eugène Delacroix. The further he explores the truth behind the illustrations the more he becomes consumed by the imagery.
Gradiva was written and directed by Alain Robbe-Grillet whose other notable films as a director include The Immortal One, Eden and After and The Beautiful Prisoner. He also wrote the screenplay for Last Year at Marienbad. The screenplay for Gradiva was adapted from German author Wilhelm Jensen’s novella “Gradiva”.

The plot for Gradiva is hallucinatory journey in which its lead protagonist an Englishman named John Locke finds himself in too deep when he becomes obsessed with finding a mysterious woman dressed in white. After some investigating he uncovers that this woman in white is somehow connected to a woman named Gradiva who was the model who posed for the recently unearthed Delacroix illustrations. The most fascinating aspect of this film is how John Locke’s journey and that of the viewer are intertwined. Besides the film’s lead protagonist John Locke the film is populated with an abundance of decadent characters that further enhance voyeuristic nature of the story at hand.

The films more erotic moments of sadistic delights look like something right out of the works of the Marquis De Sade. Surprisingly the films standout performance doesn’t come from James Wilby, the actor cast in the role of John Locke. Instead the best performance comes from an actress named Dany Verissimo who is cast in the role of Belkis a young servant girl who takes care of John Locke. Belkis as the story evolves becomes attached to John Locke who she has several sexual liaisons with. Ultimately Gradiva, is a mesmerizing tale in which all lines that discern what is real or what is an illusion are blurred.

Extras for this release include a trailer for the film (49 seconds – in French with English subtitles), text bios for the following cast members James Wilby, Arielle Dombasle & Dany Verissimo and writer / director Alain Robbe-Grillet and a text piece titled Robbe-Grillet on Gradvia. The main extra for this release is an interview with Alain Robbe-Grillet (30 minutes 52 seconds – in French with English subtitles). The interview includes comments from Alain Robbe-Grillet about his influences, eroticism, reality, fantastique, De Sade and censorship. Rounding out the extras is the Mondo Macabro preview trailer which includes clips from titles they have currently released or about to release. Overall Alain Robbe-Grillet’s final film Gradiva gets an exceptional DVD release from Mondo Macabro.

Comentario:

Synopsis: A nobleman with a barren wife finds a mistress who is fertile and able to give him the heir he desperately wants. When his mistress gives birth to twins (a boy and a girl). The nobleman orders his bodyguard to kill his mistress and her infant daughter. The bodyguard is unable to bring himself to commit murder and he helps the nobleman’s mistress and her infant daughter find a new life. Flash forward nineteen years, the daughter the nobleman never wanted and thought was dead re-emerges and falls in love with the nobleman’s son (her brother).
Naked Rashomon was directed by Chusei Sone, whose other notable films include Hellish Love, Angel Guts: High School Coed and Angel Guts: Red Classroom. The screenplay for Naked Rashomon was written by Atsushi Yamatoya who diverse screenwriting credits include Black Narcissus of Lust, Branded to Kill, Violent Virgin, Stray Cat Rock: Sex Hunter and The Fang in the Hole.
Despite the film’s title, Naked Rashomon bears little to the 1950 Akira Kurosawa film Rashomon, which is borrows its name from. In fact the structure for Naked Rashomon is told in a linear way, unlike Rashomon which is told from several people’s point of views. Naked Rashomon is a period era drama that is populated with dysfunctional characters that lose themselves in their decadent behavior. The plot features nobleman with mistress, a cheating wife, prostitutes and some incest thrown in for good measure. The plot never tries to overreach itself and everything is easy enough to follow. The film’s final act feels abrupt. With all of the craziness that unfolds in this movie the ending does a good job wrapping things up.

The sex scenes are quick and to the point. Anyone who is familiar with Japanese erotica cinema is familiar with the use of mosaic or other devices to cover up genitals. Throughout the film many unique and some that border on intrusive ways of covering up the naughty bits has been employed. Also the fact that so many different ways are used throughout the film leads me to believe that this on purpose and most likely a stylistic choice by director Chusei Sone. Visually the film is not as inventive as other Nikkatsu Roman Porno’s when it comes to the sex scenes. Despite this film’s lackluster sex scene that is not to say that this film is not without its stylish moments with a moment where a prostitute who slashes her lovers’ throats and rivers of the red blood start flowing being a standout moment.

Performance wise all of the cast are more than adequate in their respective roles. Cast in the films two lead roles Hideaki Esumi in the role of the nobleman’s bodyguard and Hitomi Kozue in the dual role of the nobleman’s mistress / daughter. Hideaki Esumi frequently worked with director Seijun Suzuki on films like Youth of the Beast, Kanto Wanderer, The Flower and the Angry Waves, Story of a Prostitute and Tokyo Drifter. Other notable films that he has appeared in include The World of Geisha, Street of Joy, A Woman Called Sada Abe, Panic in High School, The Demon, The Resurrection of the Golden Wolf and Fossilized Wilderness. Naked Rashomon was one of Hitomi Kozue’s first films and other notable films that she appeared in include True Story of Woman Condemned: Sex Hell, True Story of Woman Condemned Continues and New True Story of Woman Condemned to Hell. Ultimately Naked Rashomon is a flawed film that never fully lives up to its potential.

Marquis De Sade's Prosperities Of Vice  /  DVD-Video

Marquis De Sade
Large: FrontBack | Studio: Mondo Macabro | Production Year: 1988 | Release Date: 6/30/2009 | Length: 90 mins

Synopsis: A sadistic count recruits criminals as actors in his theater recreations of the works of the Marquis De Sade.
Marquis De Sade’s Prosperities of Vice was directed by Akio Jissoji, whose diverse filmography includes a 1979 feature film adaption of Ultraman, Art House films like Poem and Lived in a Dream, Erotica like Utamaro: Dreams and Knowledge and The Waltz, three films based on the works of Rampo Edogawa The D-Slope Murder Case, Rampo Noir and Yaneura no sanposha and the Anime Tokyo: The Last Megalopolis. Masao Nakabori the cinematographer Marquis De Sade’s Prosperities of Vice frequently worked with director Akio Jissoji. Visually Marquis De Sade’s Prosperities of Vice fluid camera movements and juxtapositioning of objects and characters for maximum effect is this films strongest asset. Another area where this film excels is in its sound design which exaggerates sounds like dripping water, thunder, the ticking of a clock and heartbeats.

The plot interweaves the writings of the Marquis De Sade with the lives of the criminals who perform for the Count. Each characters back-story is fully illustrated by showing parallels in their lives that correlate with events from the writings of the Marquis De Sade. The story takes a darker turn when life imitates art and one of the actors at the counts theater is murdered. The counts downward spiral and those who he surrounds himself with faithfully capture the essence of the Marquis De Sade.

Marquis De Sade’s Prosperities of Vice should not be viewed in the same way that one would expect when watching a Nikkatsu Roman Porno. This film is one of the first made by Nikkatsu after they decided to take a step back from the Roman Porno genre. This new style / genre, was given the brand name Ropponica. Sex scenes are not the focus as they are tame by Roman Porno standards and for those who are easily annoyed by the use of mosaic to blur naughty bits, there is no use of mosaic or any other obtrusive devices in this film. The acting ranges from good to exceptional with the standout performance coming from Koji Shimizu in the role of the count. One of the film’s more memorable moments is a scene where the Count is pretending to whip his wife as part of the play they are participating in. Without warning his wife turns around and she is lashed across her chest with the whip causing her to show her no found ecstasy in a moment of pain.

Veerana –Vengeance of the Vampire: A young woman named Jasmin is possessed by the spirit of a witch who was lynched by her father.
Even though there is a reference to vampires in the film’s title “Veerana – Vengeance of the Vampire”, the film features no vampires. At the core of the story is a riveting tale about possession that gradually builds the impending terror with its baroque visuals and the mesmerizing performance via its lead actress Jasmin (which also happens to be the name of the character she plays). It is shame that this appears to be her only film, since she definitely has a strong visual presence. The film’s greatest asset is without a doubt its lead actresses piercing eyes.
Visually this film is a tour de force of style and atmosphere in which each new revelation being more outlandish than the last. One of the film’s standout moments is a scene where an adolescent Jasmin is in her room on a swing and her mother is in the background. Her mother has figured out that all is not well with her daughter. The juxtaposition of the two characters in this scene further intensifies the impending danger.

Purani Haveli – Mansion of Evil: A young woman named Anita whose parents left her an inheritance is being raised by an uncle whose wife plots to steal her fortune. Anita and her friends decide to spend the weekend at the mansion in the country that her uncle recently bought with her money. What starts off as a trip for pleasure quickly turns into a weekend of terror!
Purani Haveli – Mansion of Evil is equal parts horror and comedy film. The film loses its momentum every time it shifts from horror to comedy. Also the bulk of the comedy scenes are a secondary plot that feels more like padding than actually adding any substance to the film’s main plot about a young woman with a sizable inheritance and the cursed mansion in which the bulk of the story takes place. The film’s pacing doesn’t help things out as the film just meanders along until its bizarre ending. If you have the patience to make it tell the film’s finale, than you are in for an extraordinary conclusion.

Unlike Jasmin in Veerana – Vengeance of the Vampire, Amita Nangia the lead actress for Purani Haveli –Mansion of Evil lacks charisma and any depth in her portrayal.
Veerana – Vengeance of the Vampire and Purani Haveli – Mansion of Evil were both directed by Tulsi Ramsay and Shyam Ramsay who also directed Purana Mandir and Bandh Darwaza. From a technical stand point both films are beautifully photographed. Performance wise outside of Jasmin in Veerana –Vengeance of the Vampire none of the performances really standout. Also both film’s feature pulsating scores that help drive home the building tension.
Overall Veerana – Vengeance of the Vampire is a well made horror film while Purani Haveli – Mansion of Evil is a convoluted story that never fully realizes it’s potential.

Mahakaal: The Monster - A young woman and her friends are terrorized by a sadistic killer when they dream.
First and foremost, Mahakaal: The Monster opening acknowledges its main influence Wes Craven’s a Nightmare on Elm Street. In fact at least two of the kills in Mahakaal: The Monster, are blatant variations of deaths scenes from a Nightmare on Elm Street. The plot for Mahakaal: The Monster feels strung together and it wears out its welcome long before its predictable happy ending.
The horror related scenes in the film are very good and at times exceptionally executed. The comedy and song dance parts of the film are painful to watch and not in a terrifying way. At least during one of the musical numbers one of the leading ladies is drenched with water. One thing that is sort of amusing in the film is a character that kind of resembles Michael Jackson and the first time this character appears music from Thriller plays in the background.  Also the score for the film features a musical motif that sounds like a musical motif used in a Nightmare on Elm Street.

Tahkhana: The Dungeon - A monster that has been lurking in a dungeon is accidentally freed by a group of friends looking for treasure.
At the core of Tahkhana: The Dungeon is a story about two sisters who haven’t seen each other in years. Each sister has half of a necklace that when put together it makes a map that shows where an ancient family relics have been hidden. The most despicable character in Tahkhana: The Dungeon is a pervert named Shahkal who rapes or tries to rape just about everyone of the female cast. At just under two hours the plot moves along nicely with only a few minor missteps. This film like Mahakaal: The Monster also features a musical number in which one of the leading ladies is soaked by pouring rain. The two actresses, who are cast as sisters in the film Sheetal and Aarti Gupta (Purana Mandir), provided plenty of eye candy.

Mahakaal: The Monster and Tahkhana: The Dungeon, were both directed by Tulsi Ramsay and Shyam Ramsay who also directed Purana Mandir, Bandh Darwaza, Veerana – Vengeance of the Vampire and Purani Haveli – Mansion of Evil. Visually Mahakaal: The Monster and Tahkhana: The Dungeon, are both stylish films that are expertly directed. Performance wise both films come up short with no one performance leaving any lasting impression. Overall Mahakaal: The Monster comes off as nothing more than a Nightmare on Elm Street cone that brings nothing to the table, while Tahkhana: The Dungeon in an enjoyable horror film that has all the ingredients that one would expect from a Tulsi and Shyam Ramsay film.

Extras Review:
Extras include text pieces for each film and cast bios that were written by Pete Tombs. The main extra included for this release is a twenty five minute documentary about South Asian Horror that is broken up into three sections India’s Bollywood, Pakistan and Indonesian cinema. For anyone who ever wanted to know more about the cinema that comes from Southern Asia this is another excellent documentary from Mondo Macabro that covers a lot of ground in such a brief amount of time. This documentary was also included on Mondo Macabro’s first Bollywood Horror double feature DVD. Also included with this release is the Mondo Macabro preview trailer which includes clips from titles they have currently released or about to release. Overall another pair of Bollywood horror films get a strong DVD release from Mondo Macabro.

Synopsis: A sadistic warden makes an example of a young woman named Masayo who the other inmates look up to.
Female Prisoner: Caged! was directed by Masaru Konuma whose other notable films within the Roman porno genre include Flower & Snake ‘74′, Cloistered Nun: Runa’s Confession, Erotic Diary of an Office Lady, Tattooed Flower Vase and Wife to be Sacrificed. Visually Female Prisoner: Caged! is filled with a lot style. There are three standout set pieces, a sex scene involving a prison guard and a priest, Masayo’s reuniting with her lover in front of a prison guard and the film’s brutal ending. While there is plenty to enjoy in Female Prisoner: Caged! the end result is not as satisfying when compared to Masaru Konuma’s best films like, Flower & Snake ‘74′ and Wife to be Sacrificed.

The image “http://img118.imageshack.us/img118/7876/femaleprisonercagedshit.png” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

Even from a WIP (Women in Prison) stand point the film struggles to find its identity. The story plods along at a tedious pace with shocking moments like gang rapes and golden showers popping up every now and then to keep things interesting. Outside of your cliché WIP scenario’s the plot is nonexistent. Also Female Prisoner: Caged! like so many of Nikkatsu Studios Roman porno’s from the 1980’s suffers from lack of budget. Another one of the film’s flaws is that the cast all seem to go through the motions. The only performance of note is the actress that plays the prison guard who sleeps with a priest. Ultimately Female Prisoner: Caged! lacks the depth and perversion that is present in Masaru Konuma bests films.

Synopsis: Rumiko a promiscuous young woman accidentally kills one of her fathers’ associates. Her father not wanting to cause a scandal forces her to become a nun. Stubborn and not wanting to conform, Rumiko quickly discovers that the nuns at her convent have a darker side waiting to be unleashed.
Sins of Sister Lucia was directed by Koyu Ohara whose other notable films include Wet Rope Confession, Fairy in a Cage, True Story of Woman Condemned: Sex Hell, True Story of Woman Condemned Continues, New True Story of Woman Condemned to Hell and White Rose Campus: Then Everybody Gets Raped. The screenplay for Sins of Sister Lucia was written by Chiho Katsura whose other notable screenwriting credits include Rape! 13th Hour, Assault! Jack the Ripper, Flower and Snake: Sketch of Hell and Hausu.
At the core of the plot for Sins of Sister Lucia is a character named Rumiko (she later is given the name Lucia by the mother superior at the convent). Here back-story is told through a series of flashbacks. Even through these glimpses into her past one could see that her relationship with her corrupt father sets in motion her eventual downward spiral. Also the more her character is exposed to the darker side of life this pushes her farther over the edge, to an eventual breakdown.

Visually Sins of Sister Lucia a well directed film that features many memorable moments like a scene were the nuns subdue Rumiko with yarn and a scene where two escaped convicts rape Rumiko who surprises them with a look of satisfaction. The film’s standout performance comes from Yuki Nohira in the lead role of Rumiko / Sister Lucia (she would also appear in the Koyu Ohara’s Wet Rope Confession). She really starts to shine once her character Lucia lets herself after being raped. Two other performances of note Rumi Tama as mother superior and Tamaki Katsura who most Roman Porno fans will recognize as the frizzy haired waitress in Assault! Jack the Ripper. Ultimately Sins of Sister Lucia is a well made Nunsplotation film that is knee deep in this genres most perverse clichés.
